High Society
Enon - High Society

My roommate showed me this song a few months ago and threatened me to review it next. One of the vocalists, John Schmersal, was in her favorite band, Brainiac, prior to forming this group.

I really like that this album features both a male & female vocalist, it's not too common. There's also a few different sounds in this album, but it's still a very coherent album. I love the mix of indie rock and electronic sounds to make something unique. My highlights from this album are Window Display, Leave It To Rust, Sold!, and Natural Disasters.

Song Reviews

Old Dominion

Bit of a weak opener if I'm being honest. It's got a good beat but not very interesting.

Count Sheep

Slower song, but I really dig the chorus.

In This City

I love the use of layered vocals in this song.

Window Display

Really catchy song about marrying a defective robot. I really like the idea of being so desperate for love you buy a robot, but you can't even afford a good one so you're still in a shitty relationship. Funny concept.

Native Numb

I like the contrast between the super deep background singing & main voice. Nice riff.

Leave It To Rust

I love the instrumentals in this song. Also the vocals. I really like this song. I can imagine the seinfeld dancing gif working well with this song.

Disposable Parts

Great song about how women are seen as dolls with to play with, and discard when the user gets bored.

Sold!

This song is so real. You get used to being a cog in the machine, but it's still fucked up that you're not even treated as a human by corporations profiting off your labor.

Shoulder

Really funky sounding song, I'm super into it.

Pleasure and Privilege

Super energetic & fun to move to song.

Natural Disasters

Great song, about someone who makes everything around them a literal disaster, and makes it impossible to enjoy the rest of your life.

Carbonation

Not a big fan of this one. I do like the chorus and the instrumentals, but the verses are grating.

Salty

Pretty fun song, even if I can't find the lyrics for it anywhere.

High Society

The eponymous song of the album. Criticizing the upper class for its high expectations of its members, flagrant use of wealth to get their way, and disdain for lower classes.

Diamond Raft

I love the contrast of the electric high pitches, and low bass sounds.
